전시개요

<Mosquitoeyesoup>(모기 눈알 수프)는 00의 00이 주최한 첫 오픈콜에 선정된 김연우 작가의 개인전이다. 이 전시는 이미지가 빛의 속도로 스쳐 지나가는 시대에 이미지가 복제되고 재구성되는 과정과 회화가 가진 고유한 의미에 대한 질문에서 시작했다.

전시의 제목이 된 ‘모기 눈알 수프’는 인터넷상에서 중국의 10대 진미로 알려져 있다. 하지만 실제로 존재하는 듯 혹은 자신이 직접 먹어본 것처럼 설명하는 많은 인터넷 게시글 글들과 다르게 그 레시피와 파는 식당은 찾아볼 수 없고 요리의 실제 사진 또한 발견할 수 없다. 결국 모기 눈알 수프는 그럴싸한 설명과 이미지가 짜깁기 되어 퍼진 검증되지 않는 요리의 이름이다. 작가는 이처럼 진위 여부와 관계없이 우리주변에 자리한 수많은 도시 괴담처럼, 출처를 모른 채 인터넷을 통해 자주 접하여 무의식중에 익숙해진 떠도는 (밈(Meme)화된) 이미지들에 관심을 가진다. 작가는 이를 작업의 소재로 적극 활용하여 본인의 회화 안에서 다양하게 구성한다. 이번 전시는 이처럼 떠도는 이미지가 작가의 그리는 행위를 통해 재현되고 또 새로운 이미지 안에서 재구성되며 서사를 형성해가는 과정에 주목했다.

<Mosquitoeyesoup> is a solo exhibition by Yeonwoo Kim, who was selected for the first open call organized by 00 of 00. The exhibition began with questions about the process of reproduction and reconstruction of images and the inherent meaning of painting in an age where images are flashed at the speed of light.

Mosquito eye soup, the title of the exhibition, is known as a top 10 Chinese great dish on the internet. However, unlike many internet posts that describe it as if it actually exists or as if they have tried it themselves, there is no recipe, no restaurant that sells it, and no actual photographs of the dish. In the end, mosquito eyeball soup is the name of an unverified dish that has been cobbled together with a plausible description and image. Like many urban legends that surround us regardless of their authenticity, the artist is interested in floating (meme-ized) images that are often encountered on the Internet without knowing their source and have become unconsciously familiar. The artist actively utilizes them as material in her work and composes them in various ways in her paintings. This exhibition focuses on the process by which these floating images are reproduced through the artist's act of drawing and reconstructed in new images, forming a narrative.
